Last Light at Cottesloe

last light cottesloe beach seascape landscape photography

Hi Crew,

How shocking has the weather been of late?   Its been hard to try and get out and about to get any decent photos in this weather!    This photo was taken last summer, it was a beautiful evening, there were lots of people strolling up and down the beach, with quite a number of people also still swimming.  Just think only a few more months and we’ll be back to that lifestyle again.  Woo Hoo!   There is nothing like taking seascape photos on a warm summer’s evening down at the beach.

Camera Settings:

F11, ISO50, 10secs.

Lens – Canon 24-70mm F2.8

What is everyone elses’ favourite time of year to shoot?

Thanks and please feel free to comment,

Meelup Beach Is Out There

meeluprain

Hi Everyone,

I’ve just returned from a trip down south.  I was hoping to capture some awesome stormy, winter landscapes whilst I was down at Dunsborough / Yallingup but I was pretty much rained out all weekend.   This was my view from Meelup Beach this morning, at 6 degrees outside there was no way I was going to get wet.   Have to give a big hand to the people who were doing a personal training session in the carpark, talk about commitement.   All this rain is good for the dams but not photography!    Any weekend down there is still a good weekend though, Melissa and I managed to find a few nice spots to have dinner and have a few wines.

Last weekend I was driving around the hills and they were had so much green grass in the pastures it was a fantastic sight to see, get up there soon before the grass starts to die out.

What did everyone else photograph this weekend?

Canal Rocks – Yallingup Seascape

canal rocks yallingup australian seascapes landscapes

Hi Everyone,

About three weeks ago I headed down south as it had been awhile since I’d been down there.   I managed to tear around all over the place and see all the familiar spots that we all love.   The swell that weekend was absolutely massive, I headed down to Wyadup Rocks my first morning down there and if you’ve ever been to them early morning you’ll know that you spend more time looking at the ground trying to make your way down there rather than looking at the scenery.   Imagine my shock when I got down amongst the rocks and looked up at this wave that arrived out of the dark almost head height and slammed into the rocks!   I got drenched and the car had said it was 4 degrees before I got out of it, fortunately the camera was still dry.   I setup shop a little bit further back up the rocks and got some great photos.

Saturday evening saw me out at Canal Rocks and I took a walk around to the left of Canal Rocks instead of shooting Canal Rocks themselves and was presented with some really interesting rock formations.  This is a photo from that location settings were: F16, iso50, .3sec shutter speed.   The swell was still thumping through so I had to keep an eye out for the really big waves and scramble if I saw one, it was a hair raising experience!!!   Who said Landscape Photography was boring?    I visited Bunker Bay on Saturday morning and even though I didn’t get anything I was happy with I certainly walked away with a whole stack of ideas for another shoot there.

My favourite part of this photo is the water movement on the bottom lefthand side of the photograph.   I’ve never managed to capture water streaking across like that before.

Has anyone else been down south recently?

Hope you all had a great weekend,

Jamie Paterson

My Backyard Splendour

backyardsplendour

Hello Everyone,

We were lucky enough last Monday to have a beautitful intense deep red sunset, I was unlucky enough to be at home whilst it was unfolding before my eyes!   So making the best out of a bad situation I grabbed my camera and headed outside to grab this shot from my backyard and managed to capture the last minute of the sunset before is started to fade.   Its no Ansell Adams landscape but I can’t get over the amazing red in this sunset.   Did anyone else get to see this sunset?    Even if you didn’t see it what do you guys think of it?

Surf Like An Egyptian

triggsurfer

When I saw this surfing shot on my computer after my Trigg Beach shoot on Saturday, I thought it was really funny, it really reminded me of that song ‘Walk like an Egyptian” by the Bangles this is exactly the same pose they were in during their music video.

Anyhow, in the past 18mths I’ve been out shooting heaps and have heard heaps of stories from you guys, the most dramatic one being Christian’s story about stalkers , but I’ve never experienced it myself until Saturday.   I was quite happy shooting on Trigg Beach when this guy came out of the water with really bloodshot eyes and I reckon high as kite still and started yelling at me asking if I wanted him to catch a real wave.  I laughed and said that would help me out heaps, which he found quite funny.  He then decided that he was going to be my personal bouncer / photography director and started to yell at people if they got to close to me and yelling at the guys in the surf to ride good waves so that I could get better photos.   Needless to say I was totally speechless and beetroot red by this stage.      I mumbled that my card was now full and that I really appreciated his help in getting some surf photographs and started to make my way back up to the carpark.    He started to follow me and I was thinking “70-200mm you’ve been a great lens to me, here is your chance to go out like a hero if he tries anything in the carpark”.   Fortunately someone else distracted him on the way back up to the carpark and he started to yell and bark at him instead.

So with my first ‘weirdo’ experience under my belt hopefully I can now shoot in peace without being disturbed again!    Why do they always seem to strike just as you”ve got your best photography lined up?

Have any of you guys had the full stalker experience as yet?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Perth Rock Party

north cottesloe australian landscapes seascapes sunset

Hi Everyone,

Last Saturday I managed to get out and about and capture this great seascape photo.    I was annoyed that I had to stay in Perth for the long weekend and wasn’t able to go away, I was planning on going down to Dunsborough or Yallinup to capture more landscapes.   After seeing this unfold before me I was stoked that I didn’t go down south after all.   It was fantastic light that just seemed to stay around for ages and amazingly the ocean was so still that I was able to stand right on the edge of the reef without fear of getting my camera wet.  Have to be happy with that!!!

Sunday is going to be heaps of fun I’m flying up to the North West Shelf with a VIP and hoping into a helicopter and flying around to a couple of offshore installations so I’m going to be ‘happy snapping’ like crazy, it would be great if I could pull off some awesome aerial shots of us landing on some offshore installations.  Fingers crossed.

What is everyone else getting up to this weekend?   Any great photography plans?

Have a great weekend everyone,

Jamie Paterson Photography

And so it begins!!!

moodyblues

Hi Everyone,

Well my 16 day photography trip is finally here (well it will be in the morning) and I’m damn excited!   My first 10 days will be spent with Neal and Kirk travelling down the Great Southern part of the state and the Stirling Ranges getting all sort of landscape photographs.   The second part of my trip will be six days down at Dunsborough taking photos of the area and keeping the place warm and photographyically loved while Christian is away. 🙂

Neal, Kirk and I are mainly focusing on Esperance and the Stirling Ranges but we have 10 days to drift where ever we want.  Woo Hoo.

Now for the above photo it was taken at Redgate Beach in Margaret River and its another favourite landscape photograph of mine.   Again when taking this it was in between showers just like the last Redgate Beach photo.  Hope you like it.

Anyhow, I’ll be keeping you all updated as to where we are during the trip so stay tuned.

Thanks for reading,

Jamie Paterson

Bikinis, Bikinis, Bikinis

flatoutsurferspoint

Okay I admit this is just a shameless plug to get my twenty thousandth visitor to the site, but hopefully it will work. 😉    Its a number many around here have passed but starting out 12mths ago its a number I personally thought I’d never reach.  Its a great feeling to be almost there.   My next blog post is definitely going to be back to basics and a landscape photo at that, I just love photography so much that I thought whilst there is no great light or clouds around I might as well capture the great talent out there surfing.     (Check out Aquabumps for some really cool surf photos of Bondi or Clark Little for some great wave photography in Hawaii)

Its an exciting week for me as I am about to embark on a 10 day landscape photographic safari with two of WA’s most talented landscape photographers Kirk Hille and Spool Photography and slowly but surely I’ve been packing all my stuff.  Its awesome to think that in just over a weeks time we’ll be off into the sunset (hopefully a good one) touring throughout the Great Southern area of the state.   Roll on next Friday!

Anyhow who will be the 20 000th visitor?  Who ever it is thank you for getting me there.

Thank you for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson

Dream a little Dream

triggwave

Hi Everyone,

This morning I headed out to Trigg Beach to get some more surf photos, however this time rather than focusing on the surfers themselves I was more interested in some experiments with capturing the surf.   Perth isn’t known for its great surf but for this one I got down low to make the surf appear larger than it was and I was pretty happy with the result.    I also got the privilege of meeting Charlene from November Images thanks for coming along Charlene I’m guessing its not the last time you’ll head down to the beach and shoot surfers now.   I did notice though she was taking lots of close ups of the guys instead of the waves though!

I managed to catch up with Neal from Spool Photography last night at Hillary’s Boat Harbour and we watched an awesome sunset unfold before us.

Did anyone else capture the sunset last night?

Thank You for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson

Trigg Beach Tunnels

triggslider1

Hi Everyone,

Well Saturday saw me heading down to Trigg Beach to capture some more surfing shots as I knew the surf was up but also knew there was no landscape action happening here in Perth that morning.    I got down there early and it was already very crowded at the point and I’m not surprised though as there was a decent and consistent swell coming through so I managed to snap quite a few good surf photos for the short time that I was there.    There were some mini barrels happening at Trigg which was cool to see, even cooler was that a few people managed to sneak into some of them.

Has anyone else here tried Surf or Wave photography?

Its stacks of fun sitting on the beach watching the surfers, surf and seeing all the activity on the beach.   Not sure that I could do it for hours on end, day in and day out though.

Thank You for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson
