The Basin

the basin, rottnest, rottnest island, australian landscape photography, australian seascape photography,

I’ve been lucky enough to have spent the past four days at Rottnest and its been pure bliss.  Sure we had a few fronts come through with lots of rain, but they never lasted long and we pretty much had the island to ourselves.   I was staying at the Bathurst villas at Rottnest so it was a short little walk to the Basin for me via Pinky Beach.

On this particular night there was a stack of rain heading my way, it was heading towards the island really slowly so I thought let’s get the camera out and see what happens.   As it happens it was a good call and the result was pretty awesome.  I managed to grab this shot on the first night and have had to wait for four days to be able to process it.   Talk about testing ones patience!

I hope you guys enjoy it,

Jamie Paterson

Heh, brings back sweet memories! I stood on top of the rocks at sunrise back in Feb shooting the opposite way. Loved it!

Great dramatic clouds here, very nice. Great composition too. I think perhaps you could crop the bottom a bit, lower the horizon. The clouds are the stars of the show here 🙂

      Hey Flemming,

I thought you’d like this one given the great memories you had. It struck me last night, in all my years of heading over to Rottnest I’ve never actually been swimming at The Basin? As you can see I’ve already cropped the bottom quite dramatically and in this case its important to me that I retain at least some of the reef features. I do appreciate the feedback.

      thanks,

      Jamie

nice Jamie, you seem to have a way with summoning good clouds! all your recent shots have great dramatic clouds, love em.
I think I have to agree with flemming though..I think if you crop some off the bottom you could better highlight the clouds and reef
you could get the sand patch leading in from the bottom left and the edge of the reef from the bottom right..could look cool?

      Hi Matt,

Thanks for stopping by. I’ve been pretty happy with the clouds as well, but I guess its because I’ve just been heading out as fronts are coming through and not being worried about getting too wet. I’ve got my trusty shower cap to keep my gear dry just in case!

      Hey Brett,

Its pretty hard to get a bad shot at Rotto. You should definitely get back over there.

      Jamie
