Sundance

impressionist photography, seascape photography, landscape photography, australian photographer

Such an amazing day. The sun was dropping behind the waves and throwing the most beautiful golden light into the waves. Such a pleasure to photograph them.

I wanted to capture the tips of the waves throwing themselves up into the air before they came crashing down again. Waves are all about motion so it seems to make sense to me that we capture their motion. This was a handheld shot in TV priority set to 1/20th of a second to convey a sense of motion.

Thanks,

Jamie

Emerald Green

Hi Everyone,

Last Sunday Melissa the boys and I headed down to Sand Tracks in Fremantle to cool down after what was a really hot weekend.  It also sounded like a great opportunity to test out my Aquatech Housing since it had been sitting in the cupboard for almost a year!

The waves were really small so I had literally lie down on the sand just as they were about to crash and angle the camera upwards as much as possible to make this look bigger than it actually was.

I love these sorts of photos and I’ll definitely be buying a wetsuit for this winter and getting shots of larger waves.  Can’t wait!

Thanks,

Jamie

North Cottesloe Waves

north cott, seascape photography, seascapes, landscape photography australia, australian landscape photography, cottesloe

Last night I decided to hit Perth metro beaches. I was determined not to end up at North Cottesloe beach as I had shot it so many times before, but as usual I ended up at you guessed it…… North Cottesloe. I do love it down there.

The rocks and their formations are simply awesome and you can stand right out on the edge of them without getting too wet, though I did cop a soaking last night.

For me one of the best things about winter is that the North Cottesloe magic that has been hiding all summer is revealed. Exquisite rocks that were covered by sand are now exposed and facing the full force of the ocean after spending almost six months in hibernation, protected by a blanket of sand.

Winter would have to be a seascape photographers best friend.

Thanks,

Cable Beach Surf

Hi Everyone,

From the very first moment I stepped foot on Cable Beach I was fascinated with the perfectly breaking waves on the beach.  They certainly weren’t big, though people were surfing them with large surfboards, but they broke perfectly, and made great subjects.

I’ve taken a couple hundred shots of the waves up there but I really liked this one because there was just so much drama in the clouds.  Also the overcast conditions really enhanced the beautiful colour of the water.

I genuinely really miss Cable Beach.  There was nothing more relaxing than just wondering up and down the beach and capturing it in its many different moods.   Someday we’ll catch up again.

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Reflected Oceanicity

seascapes, seascape photography, australian landscape photography

Okay, I’m just going to come out with it and say this is my favourite photo that I’ve taken in a long time.   It has everything that I strive to capture in my photos.   Its got a nice warming colour and strong water movement as well.  I had to wait for just the right moment and exposure to get those reflections in the water and to capture the wave exploding onto the reef.

Hopefully this photo will earn me Mr Flemming’s ‘King of the Waves’ tittle again.  I think it will as I’ve managed to capture my passion for the ocean in this photo.

I hope you guys all like it as well,

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Earth meets Ocean

seascape photo, seascape, australian seascape photography

Wow I love this shot, I can’t believe I didn’t see it before when I was going through my images.  I just can’t get over the white streak of water rushing past where I was standing, trying to pull me in and you can see the water running off the rocks in front of me.   I managed to capture this on Friday evening, I must admit I didn’t think the sunset was going to go off, in fact when I arrived, there was nothing but rain squalls hitting the area and I was tempted to head on home.

As always patience pays off and just before sunset the rain disappeared long enough to get 20mins of shooting time.   It just goes to show you should never write off a sunrise or sunset until they’ve actually happened.

Hope everyone had a really awesome weekend!

Trigg Beach Waves

Trigg Beach, Trigg Beach waves, surf photography, wave photography

After hearing Matthew Saul and Mark Stothard talking about how good the surf was going to be on Sunday I couldn’t help myself and headed down to Trigg Beach to watch the waves come thumping through.  Its always heaps of fun and I managed to get a few decent shots as well.  Thanks for the tip you two, is there a better way to spend a Sunday morning?

Imagine being able to fly around the world getting surf shots like this!

Thanks,

Going Over The Falls

wave surf photographer photography underwater housing

Hi Everyone,

This is a self portrait of me just before I got sucked up by the wave and got thrown around like I was in a tumble dryer.   I really have a lot more respect for in water wave and surf photographers after experiencing what they have to go through.   I’m only swimming in small waves and surf, how do the guys in Hawaii do it?    Anyhow if some of you are wondering what I look like, here I am.   Though the lens has quite obviously distorted my face in all the wrong places.

Hope you guys have a good laugh at this photo.
