This is Ke’e Beach in Kauai.  Its right at the beginning of the Na Pali coast and its divine.   This beach is as far as you can get to by car on the North Shore of Kauai and it really does feel like you’re at the end of the road.  It’s quite, serene and relaxing with everyone just sitting by the foreshore watching the sun setting and contemplating their lives.

Quite a few times after the sun has set I’ve stayed behind and jumped in the water and just floated in the water, soaking up the zero gravity feeling in such an amazing place.  I’m sure I could go here for the rest of my life and never get sick of it.

Do you have a place like that at all?  One that you can keep returning to and never get bored of it?

Hawaii Waters

This photo was taken on the last day of my last trip to Hawaii, how amazingly clear is the water?   It was a really special day as I’ve been to Hawaii quite a few times but this was only the second time my wife had been there with me and her first trip there with me was almost 10yrs ago.

We spent six days together investigating little bays like this all over the island of Kauai and just jumping into the water whenever we could.  The trip finished all too quickly as they do but we got to see and shoot so much during that time.

I cant wait to get back there again!

Na Pali Coast

Hi Everyone,

Out of all the photos I’ve taken of the Na Pali coastline this would have to be my absolute favourite. Such a magical time in such a magical place!   This was taken from Ke’e Beach and I’m really grateful to the hiker who suggested that I walk around the corner an extra 200M as he thought it might be a better view.  He was so right!

I’ve said it before and its just so easy doing landscape photography in Kauai the place is just one giant canvas, full of amazing colours and vistas.

Simple Things

I always get so excited when I know I’m heading off to Kauai to do some landscape photography.   Its just such an amazing place to take photos and its so hard to come away with anything but spectacular shots.

The other reason though why I love heading to Kauai is that life just seems so simple there.  Whether that is just my perception or not I’m not sure but most people out on the North Shore just seem to be content to just make enough money to allow them to surf or just chill out.   Time doesn’t really seem to matter there either.   It reminds me of Margaret River in the early days.

So are there any places left like this within a few hours of Perth at all?  If there is, I’d love to know about them.   Preferably by the sea as we all know how important seascape photography is to me.

Hanalei Bay

I absolutely loved Hanalei Bay when I was staying in Kauai.  It just had an amazing village feel to it and everyone really was so relaxed.   Surfers would drive on to this beach and turn right and drive for 200M and then hop out of their cars and hit a really amazing wave about 250M offshore.

Families would have their huge pickup trucks on the beach with loud reggae music blasting out from their speakers and the Dads would have the BBQs all fired up.   The evenings were just magical in this bay.  The Hawaiians couldn’t believe I was walking around in shorts on a cold 24 degree day!   They were wearing jeans to keep themselves warm.

Hanalei Bay

Ahhhh Kauai, is there a more relaxing place in the world?   I think Rottnest comes pretty close and its certainly a lot cheaper to get to (only just!) but I just simply love Hawaii and the Hawaiian way of life.

This is Hanalei Bay which is a really nice spot to stay if you ever get to travel to Kauai.   It has an extremely relaxed atmosphere surrounding it and most people there are very chilled out.   Its also an extremely popular surfing spot and for good reason, look at the size of that swell coming through and all the swell lines out in the ocean.

Na Pali Cliff Face

Flying past the Na Pali coast line is such an amazing experience.  Now I love helicopters and I’ve certainly never been a nervous flyer in a helicopter but I don’t mind admitting I was extremely nervous in all but possible the last 15mins of this flight.

We flew in an open door Hughes 500 which is an extremely quick and nimble helicopter and heaps of fun.  What got me though was that as we climbed up the huge mountains we started to get battered around by the winds screaming across the ridges.   It wasn’t a light bit of turbulence we were quite literally thrown around, so much so that at one stage I stopped shooting and hung onto my seat with both hands.   The other awesome part of the ride was that once we made it over the ridge, we’d get a massive shove by those winds which had now become tailwinds and we just rocketed away from the ridge.

It was doubly intense because not only did we shoot past the mountain ridge at speed we did it with a 4000ft drop below us.   The mountains in Hawaii are so steep and don’t have an gentle slopes on them, so one minute you are just making it across the ridge and then the next minute you have a massive drop right below you.

Those helicopter pilots really knew their stuff and were edging deep into canyons and weaving their way right up next to waterfalls.  It was easily the most crazy and exciting helicopter ride I’ve ever had.   If you ever make it to Kauai and you want a new thrill in your life, go for an open door flight past the Na Pali coast line, oh and don’t forget to take some photos in amongst all the excitement.

From Where I’d Rather Be

Yes I know it sounds like the Corona ad but its true.  I swear I was Hawaiian in a previous life as I really identify with the islands and the Hawaiian way of life.   I’ve been there four times and I’m planning yet another trip there again.   It was only February that I was there last, but its seems like an eternity.

On my last trip I spent six days in Kauai just shooting away and driving around and listening to heaps of Hawaiian reggae.   Paradise!

This shot is from the North East part of the island, in fact the surf you see below me was Andy Irons local beach and on a good day can have surf up to 30ft in height.  To get this shot I set my camera to TV mode and used a shutter speed of 800th of second.   Oh and of course I was in a helicopter at approx 1500ft.

I hope you guys enjoy it.   Hopefully I’ll be able to bring you more photos from Hawaii next February.

Ke’e Beach

Hi Everyone,

As most of you know, a little while back I was lucky enough to be able to stop off in Hawaii for six days on my way to Texas.   I just love the place so much and I think I could easily live there for the rest of my life.  Its funny because many of the Hawaiians that I talked to just wanted to get off ‘the rock’ and move to the mainland.

I guess the grass really is always greener on the other side!

This is Ke’e Beach in Kauai.   Its at the end of the road that leads out to the Na Pali coast.  If you want to go and see those awesome cliffs in the background you need to walk to them or catch a boat to them in summer.  Its just not possible to get there by boat in winter, I flew in a helicopter to the area and the pilot estimated that some of the waves below us were around 30ft.

Ke’e Beach reminded me of The Basin at Rottnest a little bit because no matter how heavy the seas are, there is always a sheltered swimming spot.  You can see it, its the small patch of green just below the mountain.

Hopefully I’ll get to head back there again soon.   I hope you all had an awesome weekend.

Na Pali Coast

Hi Everyone,

Well the excitement is well and truly started!   Mark has just driven into Fremantle to pick up the keys to the gallery so that we can start hanging our photos in readiness for the exhibition opening on Friday night.   I hope you are all excited as we are.

This photo was taken on my second last day in Kauai and it was really cool to be buzzing around the Na Pali coast in a helicopter.   I must admit though, when we first got to height and started going right up to the canyon walls I started to wonder how much closer we could get, before the blades were going to hit the walls.   I also admit to being white knuckled and grabbing my seat when we went racing over a ridge being only to see there was a 4000ft drop on the other side.

Once we all settled in though it was an awesome flight.  We spent 60min in the air and weaved in and out of lots of nooks and crannies and saw some fantastic waterfalls as well, as always it was a real let down once we had to head home.

From the air the waves are deceptive in their height, the waves crashing into the cliffs were actually close to 20ft in height.

The camera settings I used while in the air were: AV Priority – F8, ISO 400, shutter speed as determined by camera.   I hope you guys like it.
