Surf Like An Egyptian

triggsurfer

When I saw this surfing shot on my computer after my Trigg Beach shoot on Saturday, I thought it was really funny, it really reminded me of that song ‘Walk like an Egyptian” by the Bangles this is exactly the same pose they were in during their music video.

Anyhow, in the past 18mths I’ve been out shooting heaps and have heard heaps of stories from you guys, the most dramatic one being Christian’s story about stalkers , but I’ve never experienced it myself until Saturday.   I was quite happy shooting on Trigg Beach when this guy came out of the water with really bloodshot eyes and I reckon high as kite still and started yelling at me asking if I wanted him to catch a real wave.  I laughed and said that would help me out heaps, which he found quite funny.  He then decided that he was going to be my personal bouncer / photography director and started to yell at people if they got to close to me and yelling at the guys in the surf to ride good waves so that I could get better photos.   Needless to say I was totally speechless and beetroot red by this stage.      I mumbled that my card was now full and that I really appreciated his help in getting some surf photographs and started to make my way back up to the carpark.    He started to follow me and I was thinking “70-200mm you’ve been a great lens to me, here is your chance to go out like a hero if he tries anything in the carpark”.   Fortunately someone else distracted him on the way back up to the carpark and he started to yell and bark at him instead.

So with my first ‘weirdo’ experience under my belt hopefully I can now shoot in peace without being disturbed again!    Why do they always seem to strike just as you”ve got your best photography lined up?

Have any of you guys had the full stalker experience as yet?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Kaboom!!! Injidup Waves Explode

injidup waves surf australian landscapes seascapes

Hi Everyone,

I was lucky enough this weekend to slip away down to Dunsborough for Thursday night, Friday and Saturday and it was absolutely awesome down there.   Friday night saw me at Wyadup Rocks capturing some awesome seapscapes, though when I turned around I saw that all the colour in the sky on the otherside of the cape.  Typical!!!   🙂  Friday night I went down to Canal Rocks and found some interesting areas that I hadn’t investigaged before and on Saturday morning I snuck down to Bunker Bay and had a blast.   The light was fairly subtle all weekend but the conditios wee still pretty good.   All in all it was a great couple of days.

This wave photograph was taken down at Injidup, the swell was huge and I mean scary huge and they were just exploding against the rocks, so much so that you could feel the rocks actually shaking.    It just makes you remember that the sea is such a powerful force.

What were the conditions like here in Perth?   Did anyone get out and about at all?

Thanks for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson

Bennion Beach Streaks

bennion cottesloe trigg beach waves surf australian landscapes seascapes

Hi Everyone,

I managed to pick a wicked Saturday morning to go shooting down at Bennion Beach!    I started off down at Cottesloe Beach and then saw it was high tide so I worked my way up to Trigg Beach and then settled at Bennion Beach.   The surf was smashing through and the waves were coming in huge sets.   Just before I captured this shot I was lining it up when a freak wave came through and covered me up to my waist, I had to hold the tripod above my head to keep it dry.    I certainly felt like I was in an action movie instead of trying to capture a half decent seascape!     Unfortunately there was a casualty from the wave soaking (aside from wet tracksuit pants), I lost a saftey thong, fortunately I managed to put my camera into a safe spot and then had to wade back into the water waist deep again to rescue my thong.

I certainly got a lot of weird looks from people when I crawled back up to the carpark soaking wet with camera in hand.   Oh well, no pain, no gain.   I certainly think the shot was worth it, hopefully you guys do as well.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done to capture a photo?

Thanks for reading my post,

Jamie Paterson Photography

Firey Redgate Beach

Redgate Beach Margaret River Australian Landscapes Seascapes Waves sunset

Hi Everyone,

About four weeks now I was down south relaxing around the sametime Dylan Fox and Clint Baker were down there.   The farmers in the Dunsborough and Margaret River region had been buring off for days and it was really hazy down there.    Though it made taking landscape photographs during the day extremely hard, what it did do was provide amazing sunsets that just seemed to hang around for ever.    I had been taking a stack of photos of the waves crashing over the rocks at Redgate Beach (which is near Margaret River) and I was walking back to the carpark when I saw this photo opportunity present itself, how could I resist?

Hope you all enjoy the photo!

Thank You,

Jamie Paterson Photography

Busselton Jetty Reds

Busselton Jetty Australian Landscape Photography Jamie Paterson

Hello Crew,

This is a shot that I managed to get on a recent trip down to Busselton.   The farmers had been burning off the whole time I’d been down there and the smoke was ensuring that the sunsets were staying around for ages (at least 20mins) and were a really deep red.   Its a pleasure taking landscapes like this when the sunset hangs around for ever instead of the usual two second sunsets that we get here in Perth, Australia.   Normally as any other West Australian landscape photographer will tell you, we get about 5 maybe 10mins max to capture a sunset so if you ever see someone tearing up and down a beach clambering over sand dunes and rocks and doing crazy things chances are its one of us taking photos.

I know that Dylan Fox and Clint Baker were down there at the same time and I’m sure we’ll be seeing some more awesome photos from those guys shortly.   I think with light like I had down at Busselton / Dunsborough / Margaret River during that week Clint’s Curse is finally broken. 🙂

So has anyone else been caputring any good photos?   They don’t even have to be landscapes.

Anyone want to place a bet on how long Clint gets to stay in Greece before we see in the Greek news “Australian Landscape Photographer deported for bad light” lol.

Esperance Rocks!!!

australian landscapes

Today is bonus day, two posts in one day!    This photo was taken my first morning in Esperance, what an amazing sight to wake up to.  As landscape photographers we spend so much time up early in the mornings and out late at night chasing the elusive landscape photograph often only to have nature spoil our plans, so its a great feeling when you arrive on location and see something like this unfold before you.   This was taken next to Twilight Cove in Esperance.

Did anyone get any good photos whilst we were away?   What was the light like in Perth?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

And so it begins!!!

moodyblues

Hi Everyone,

Well my 16 day photography trip is finally here (well it will be in the morning) and I’m damn excited!   My first 10 days will be spent with Neal and Kirk travelling down the Great Southern part of the state and the Stirling Ranges getting all sort of landscape photographs.   The second part of my trip will be six days down at Dunsborough taking photos of the area and keeping the place warm and photographyically loved while Christian is away. 🙂

Neal, Kirk and I are mainly focusing on Esperance and the Stirling Ranges but we have 10 days to drift where ever we want.  Woo Hoo.

Now for the above photo it was taken at Redgate Beach in Margaret River and its another favourite landscape photograph of mine.   Again when taking this it was in between showers just like the last Redgate Beach photo.  Hope you like it.

Anyhow, I’ll be keeping you all updated as to where we are during the trip so stay tuned.

Thanks for reading,

Jamie Paterson

Bikinis, Bikinis, Bikinis

flatoutsurferspoint

Okay I admit this is just a shameless plug to get my twenty thousandth visitor to the site, but hopefully it will work. 😉    Its a number many around here have passed but starting out 12mths ago its a number I personally thought I’d never reach.  Its a great feeling to be almost there.   My next blog post is definitely going to be back to basics and a landscape photo at that, I just love photography so much that I thought whilst there is no great light or clouds around I might as well capture the great talent out there surfing.     (Check out Aquabumps for some really cool surf photos of Bondi or Clark Little for some great wave photography in Hawaii)

Its an exciting week for me as I am about to embark on a 10 day landscape photographic safari with two of WA’s most talented landscape photographers Kirk Hille and Spool Photography and slowly but surely I’ve been packing all my stuff.  Its awesome to think that in just over a weeks time we’ll be off into the sunset (hopefully a good one) touring throughout the Great Southern area of the state.   Roll on next Friday!

Anyhow who will be the 20 000th visitor?  Who ever it is thank you for getting me there.

Thank you for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson

Dream a little Dream

triggwave

Hi Everyone,

This morning I headed out to Trigg Beach to get some more surf photos, however this time rather than focusing on the surfers themselves I was more interested in some experiments with capturing the surf.   Perth isn’t known for its great surf but for this one I got down low to make the surf appear larger than it was and I was pretty happy with the result.    I also got the privilege of meeting Charlene from November Images thanks for coming along Charlene I’m guessing its not the last time you’ll head down to the beach and shoot surfers now.   I did notice though she was taking lots of close ups of the guys instead of the waves though!

I managed to catch up with Neal from Spool Photography last night at Hillary’s Boat Harbour and we watched an awesome sunset unfold before us.

Did anyone else capture the sunset last night?

Thank You for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson

Trigg Beach Tunnels

triggslider1

Hi Everyone,

Well Saturday saw me heading down to Trigg Beach to capture some more surfing shots as I knew the surf was up but also knew there was no landscape action happening here in Perth that morning.    I got down there early and it was already very crowded at the point and I’m not surprised though as there was a decent and consistent swell coming through so I managed to snap quite a few good surf photos for the short time that I was there.    There were some mini barrels happening at Trigg which was cool to see, even cooler was that a few people managed to sneak into some of them.

Has anyone else here tried Surf or Wave photography?

Its stacks of fun sitting on the beach watching the surfers, surf and seeing all the activity on the beach.   Not sure that I could do it for hours on end, day in and day out though.

Thank You for stopping by,

Jamie Paterson
