Cape Naturaliste Sunset

cape naturaliste, australian landscape photography, australian seascape photography,

Hi Everyone,

I managed to capture this shot last weekend while I was down south.   I thought I’d finished shooting for the night and was actually walking back to the car when I turned around once last time and saw this scene.  Needless to say I had to unpack my camera as quickly as possible as I won’t going to miss capturing this moody, dramatic, stormy sunset.   For those who like to know:

Camera Settings:

Aperture – F11

ISO – 1oo

Shutter – 6secs

Filter – 3 stop GND Singh Ray filter

As always I’m glad that I turned around as I was walking off.  Have you guys ever done that?  Started to walk off only to find that your best shot was unfolding right behind your back?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Burns Beach Sunrise

burns beach, landscape photographer, seascape photographer,

Hi Guys,

This is a seascape photo I managed to grab a couple of weeks ago from Burns Beach its a place I’m starting to look at more closely as there are heaps of rock formations around.   Yes there is heaps to photography in Perth but I have to admit I’m getting restless and hanging out to head down south again to Fletcher territory to get some awesome shots.  Well off to try and get some more shots.  Let’s hope the breeze doesn’t pick up and blow all these great clouds away!

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Port Beach Splash

Hi Everyone,
I srpung out of bed at 7:30am (instead of 5am like I was supposed to!) and decided to head down to the beach to have a dip and grab a few wave photos.  I’m so glad I did, it was beautiful.   Melissa and Xavier chilled out in the sand whilst I got some pretty cool shots as the waves were breaking onto the beach.   Its a shame that winter is fast approaching, there is nothing like waking up in the morning and heading off down to the beach.    Hope you guys are all enjoying the weekend so far.

Cape Naturaliste Sunset

Cape Naturaliste Sunset Yallingup Dunsborough Australian Landscape Photography

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone had a great weekend, you can tell you live in a small city when everyone turns out to see a cruise ship turning up to Fremantle.  We were lucky enough to have the Queen Mary 2 turn up today for a few hours.  If you want to see some photos check out Clint Baker’s website.

This is another photo from my trip down south a few weeks ago.   By this stage the moon had risen and the mossies were trying to carry me off to where ever they come from.    Still I didn’t mind them too much as this place was just a photographic goldmine.   I stayed around for an hour after the sunset which meant I got some great photos but I unfortunately got lost on the way back to the carpark.

I climbed up the sand dunes that the surfers had and it was all good until I got to the top of the dunes.  The tracks just seemed to disappear and not lead to anywhere.   I had to start walking through the bush and it was really hot so I imagined there would be plenty of tiger snakes and dugites prowling looking for a meal and I was hoping that I didn’t step on one!   Fortunately I didn’t and I made it back to the car safely!

Cottesloe Beach @ 43 Degrees

Hi Everyone,

Its really rare for me to post an unedited landscape photograph but I just couldn’t help myself with this one.   I was down at Cottesloe Beach when it was 43 degrees and it was stinking hot!   It took me 10mins to get to the beach as I couldn’t park near Cottesloe as all the car parks were full.

This is a 10 stitch image of Cottesloe Beach.   If I didn’t have all my camera gear with me I would definetely have just jumped into the water myself.   Any way back to processing the image.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting everyone!

Quindalup Stormy Skies

Hi Crew,

Well this is officially my last post for the year.  Can’t believe its gone so incredibly fast.  Again I hope you all party safely and I can’t wait to catch up with you all in the New Year.

This shot was taken at Quindalup boat ramp with Mark.  As you can see the skies were really going off this particular afternoon.    I’ve got heaps more shots from Sugarloaf Rock and Wyadup Rock from this evening but of course I’ll post them in the new year.

See you next year everyone,

Jamie Paterson

Dunsborough Summer Storms

Hi Everyone,

I’m back in Perth for New Years Eve.  It wasn’t the plan but things change unfortunately.   Anyhow I had a fantastic time down south even though it was short.   Melissa, Xavier and I were treated to a wonderful afternoon by Mark at True North Ashore.  He was an amazing host and all three of us had a great time there.   Folks, if you want a romantic weekend in beautiful Eagle Bay with your partner or just want to get away with the family, you can’t go past True North Ashore.   It even has a little creek with rocks from the Kimberley running through the middle of the house and the master bedrooms are just amazing.   It made it hard for us to go back to our humble little caravan!   Thanks for a great afternoon Mark.

This shot is from a shoot that Mark and I did on Tuesday.   It was extremely still and humid that day and we decided to head out to Quindalup before heading over to Injidup Beach.   It was the weather that landscape photographers just die for.   The skies were dark and moody yet the sun was sneaking through and highlighting all the colours in the plants.   Just standing back and looking at it all was so cool, its times like these I realise I’m fortunate to be able to take Australian landscapes.

I hope you all have a fantastic and safe New Years eve tonight and that 2010 is a great year for each and everyone of you.

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Some Days Are Diamonds

perth sunset australian landscapes seascapes jamie paterson

Some days are diamonds and other days you just get lucky.   Well yesterday was both.   Its been five weeks since I’ve ventured out to take a serious photo, not sure why probably a little battle fatigued from a pretty tough year.   I just had to get out last night and ‘recharge’ my batteries, I hopped in the car and with no particular destination in mind just started to drive.    Those who know me well enough would know that I instinctly drove to the coast for my recharge.    I hit the coast at Port Beach near Fremantle, and headed past Cottesloe Beach, Scarborough and then past Trigg Beach.   Finally I decided to hop out of the car and below me I saw a really small group of rocks that were just begging to have their photo taken.  Being the ever obliging seascape photographer that I am, I grabbed my camera gear and walked down to the beach and setup my gear.

After being there for an hour and working out my shots the sun finally set and I got to work.   The joys of taking seascape photographs came flooding back into my veins, I felt alive again and I think the joy of coming alive again were reflected in my photos.   I’m really happy with this one.   Where do you guys go for your recharge?   Is it just taking photos itself that recharges you, or do you have a certain location that you gravitate to?

Photo Settings:

Aperture – F22

ISO – 50

Shutter – 1.6sec

I hope you guys enjoy looking at it as much as I did taking it.   All comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Twilight at Lucky Bay – Esperance

lucky bay esperance australian landscapes seascapes jamie paterson photography

Hi Everyone,

As some of you may or may not know, earlier this year I had the privilege of going down to Esperance with Neal of Spool Photography and Kirk Hille.    This was from our second night out at Lucky Bay in Esperance.   As there was stacks of seaweed on the beach I thought I would go in search of some water crashing against some really steep rocks.   Remember as a landscape and seascape photographer we don’t always get to shoot what we want so rather than waste the sunset or sunrise we have to quickly find something else to shoot.

Well I found a little trail leading off past the big rocks at Lucky Bay and I decided to follow it.   It took me 25mins of walking to find some decent rocks and I managed to get a few decent shots.   I then commenced the really steep walk home and once I got to the top of the hill I just had to stop for some water.   It was from here that I took the shot.  I was admiring the rock and just looking over Lucky Bay and relaxing when being a bit slow from all the exercise I finally realised that this would actually make a pretty cool shot.   I love this shot its a typical Australian Landscape married with a great seascape shot.   You’ve got the red rocks with green bush and the beautiful colours of Lucky Bay below.   I couldn’t have asked for much more.

Its amazing how some of our best shots happen when we least expect it.   I’m definitely heading down there again next year probably a bit further East this time though as well as a bit more time around the town.   Hopefully I can get up to Broome as well and maybe share a beer with Flemming.

Does anyone else have any grand photography trips lined up for next year?   Can anyone else share an accidently shot that turned out to be amazing?

Jamie Paterson

Bunker Bay – Just Tinkering

bunker bay dunsborough yallingup australian landscapes seascapes

Hi Everyone,

Just me tinkering around with some textures.  I’ve been hanging out to try this sort of photoshop treatment for ages but I couldn’t find a site that had any decent textures to use.   Well thanks to Brent Pearson I’ve finally managed to find a site full of textures that I’m going to use to experiment on my Australian landscape and seascape photographs.   Obviously textures don’t suit every photo but its certainly fun to try something different.   Have any of you guys experimented with textures in your photos at all?   If you haven’t tried it but are curious and want to give it a go, check out Brent’s excellent tutorial on is blog.

On with the tinkering. 🙂

Comments are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson
