Monte Bello Corals

Hi Everyone,

This is another photo of the Monte Bello Islands.   If you’re into taking seascapes then its the place for you.   For those of you who don’t know about the history of the Monte Bello Islands, its quite fascinating.   It was the site of Britain’s first atomic bomb tests in Australia and you can still see lots of debris and buildings that were left over from the tests.    At Trimoulle Island we were able to look back and see the viewing platform that they used to watch the bombs going off, it was only approximately 5kms away from where the bombs went off.   We couldn’t believe that they setup the viewing platform so close.    Imagine suggesting to someone in this day and age that they stand behind a steel viewing platform and look at an atomic bomb going off!!!   They would just laugh.

Those poor guys certainly weren’t safe from the fallout, fallout was even registered in Brisbane days later.

Photo Settings:

Aperture – F11

ISO – 50

Shutter Speed – 1/100sec

Cruising around the area in a boat its hard to understand how anyone could blow up such a beautiful area.   These days its pristine and if you ever get the chance to head out there you should.  If nothing else you might come back with a nice healthy glow. 😉

      Hi Sandy,

      Thanks for the comment. 🙂 The water was that inviting that I just had to get in. Actually the reason why I had to jump in was because Mike Fletcher dropped his monopod into the water.

    Nice one Jamie, nice colour in the water and pretty cool reef. Is there any sealife there now after the places history? I like the fact that you had to jump in to get mikes monopod, haha.

      Hi Danny,

      We were all amazed at how untouched the area seemed. It is quite thought provoking that the place has only been reopened to the public for a very short time. Was there any sealife? The place was just full of sealife. We had a dolphin right up against the boat. Whales migrage past it and we saw stacks of turtles, sharks and rays in the areaa as well. It was really cool.

      I think Mike still owes me a beer for the monopod retrieval. Actually it was funny when I first dived down to get it, I grabbed what I thought was his monopod only to find out it was a dirty great big black fish. It jumped and I jumped and had to straight back to the surface from the shock. I got his monopod on the second dive. I really think he does owe me a beer after all that really. 🙂
