Hi Everyone,
I’m trying to decide which version I like better and I can’t really make up my mind, so I thought I’d leave it to the masses to help me out. Which one should I use? So why the tittle ‘Distant Memories’? Well the house in the photo is an abandoned house which is starting to decay. I am absolutely obsessed with history and historical things so I had to get a photo of it. I feel drawn to these houses (or other things like disused mines etc…)because it often causes me to stop and think that very real people lived in these places, often in extremely harse conditions. They had hopes and dreams and worked hard to try and achieve them. What happened to them? Did they prosper and move on? Did they try so hard until they had to give up?
So that explains why I took a photo of the ruined house, now back to the original question. Which version do you prefer?
Thank you for stopping by and reading my blog.

Hrm…difficult decision…
I think the foreground looks a little lifeless in the top one, but then looks a little over-saturated in the second one, so I think I’d like to see something in-between these two.
The sky looks a little over-done in both – because it’s so dark, there’s no definition of the clouds themselves.
Ok. I’ve not done any treatment on the sky whatsoever. I do agree with the second one perhaps being a little saturated.
Thanks Marty. 🙂
Second one for me, Jamie. I have always been a fan of nice rich colours 🙂
But then again, the first one is a bit more ominous, moody, etc so I guess it just depends what you are trying to convey with the image..
Second one for me, I like the saturated golden grass it goes well with the very dark brooding dramatic sky. Might also work very well as a duotoned shot!
It’s a lovely scene and good photo, I can see why you shot it – I would definitely stop and notice and shoot this too!
the bottom one for me mate…. although the sky in both are a little over done maybe a boost of contrast and a little brightening would help?? or just the contrast and see how that looks
Second one for me Mr Paterson. I would look at the colors in the sky and with selective layers panel remove some of the magenta, making the whites a little more white. The grasses need to have more definition through removing some of the highlights and bringing out the dark tones of the grass. A tighter crop would also work a little better as the home would dominate a little more through less grass area surrounding it. I think by reducing the dynamic range of the image through my suggestions and a little tighter crop your on your way to adding another image to you portfolio …
just my 2 cents though …
I like the bottom one jamie as well jamie
love that golden grass
The upper feels cold, ominous, desperate… makes me want to put on a sweater. I really like it
The lower is just too damn hot.
Yup, I like the top. So much emotion to it.
Hard to pick but probably the bottom one. The clouds don’t do it for me in either shot.
If the house is the focal point I would have gone closer to the house, but that”s me.
The bottom one looks a little bit more natural to me. I guess it comes back to what you want from or to do with the image. I also think it could work well as a mono/duotone.
Thank you to all of you for your input. I will work on the second one a little more.
I’d like to say a special welcome to Neighbor Nancy for commenting on my blog for the first time. 🙂
Hi Jamie,
I think Tony is spot on with his call for a B&W. Definitely brings out the historical feel and add a vignette as while you`re there! Composition and clouds are good. Have a good weekend mate.
It’s the lower one for me too although it does seem orange. I’d like to see the top one with that golden glow the grass gets come sunset at this time of year. A B+W would be good to see as well.
Tough call, I’d have to go with the top one.
I’d go the top one, i think it conveys the mood better. Then again, i’m a big fan of monotone landscape photos.
Nice to see non-Wordpress users can comment now 🙂
Hi Everyone,
Again thank you all for taking the time out to comment. Thanks to Flemming for actually working the photo as a duotone and sending it to me. I’m still not really sure what I want to do with this just yet, so I think I’ll sit on it for awhile. I do think the second one conveys more of what I was trying to achieve but with a little less orange in grass.
On with the next post. LOL. 🙂
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Hi Charlene,
Welcome to the blog always nice to see a new ‘face’ on here so thanks for stopping by.

Try the first ones sky and second one’s foreground.
Hi James,
I will coz that is what I was thinking. The only difference between the two photos is that on the top one I desaturated everything with the exception of the house. So I am going to just desaturate the sky a little.

How uncanny, I had some similar issues… Mr.T
