Anini Beach

anini beach, kauai photography, hawaii photos, seascape photography,

After almost 12mths in the planning I was finally able to stop off at Kauai, Hawaii on my annual visit to Houston and its something I’ll never forget.  Kauai has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth.   Each day I found myself waking up before sunrise of course and wondering what visual delights would unfold before me that day.   I was never disappointed with what I saw at all.   The funniest thing about Kauai for me was all the chickens but that is another story for another time.    On this particular day I caught up with Kauai photographer Scott Tylor and we managed to get to some awesome out of the way places and also managed to meet the ‘Duke’ some whacked out guy who kept telling us he was the island’s best surfer.

This beach is called Anini Beach and people like Julia Roberts and Slyvester Stallone own homes here and for good reason.  Its stunning.  Definitely a place I’d love to take the family back to so that the boys can play and splash in the shallows.    We were just about to leave Anini Beach when we spotted these really cool patterns in the water, we quickly unpacked our cameras and started shooting them for the next 30mins.  Talk about heaps of fun!

What do you guys think of the patterns?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Sweet photo Jamie, such clear water! It’s also great to hear the context behind an image.

    Cheers,
    Lloyd

      Hey Lloyd,

Thanks for that. The water is amazing over there. I will certainly be working on the stories behind my photos a lot more this year.

Hey jamie. You are a big inspiration for me mate! just a quick one. when you shoot shots like this during the day, how do you get the sky to look this balanced? Is it just a grad and a polariser? Also what polariser do you use? any PP done to achieve the sky? thanks for any help you can give mate. also consider making a dvd! I would be first to buy!

      Hi Matt,

Thanks for the great compliment mate. Always nice to hear feedback like that. I’m starting to use filters less and less and I’m opting for multiple exposures more often than not. I’m also utilizing double raw image processing where appropriate. This shot was taken with a polarizer so that the camera could ‘see’ into the water. I didn’t do use it to balance the light. I then processed the raw image for the sky and then for the foreground and then combined the two to create Anini Beach.

I hope that helps out. What would you like to see on a DVD?

Arrr thanks Jamie! I am too just starting to play with exposure blending. We’ll for a start I would like to see that on the dvd haha. And other post production methods you use. Also more videos like you have on youtube, on location and explaining what is going through your head. They are very helpful. Keep up the great work mate.
